The Baronets of Ruddigore are a cursed royal family, in which the current baronet must commit a crime every single day or die in agony. Robin Oakapple is secretly the current Baronet of Ruddigore, but has hidden away to escape the curse, causing his brother Despard to suffer its effects. Robin is in love with Rose Maybud, but they are both too shy to tell each other. Trouble strikes when the handsome sailor Richard Dauntless also falls in love with Rose. He tells Despard about Robin’s deception, thereby re-giving Robin the curse of Ruddigore in order to steal Rose away. In the second act, Robin – now the Baronet – is confronted by his ancestors, who come alive from their portraits to demand he fulfill the demands of the curse. He must then figure out how to satisfy their demands while continuing to live a good life!
